If you’re someone who’s been looking for a few creative ways to boost up your curb appeal or backyard and you happen to have a fence, have you ever thought about putting some effort into decorating it a bit? Although typically we tend to look at our fences as simply being a way to keep our children and pets in our yard while also providing us with a bit of privacy, the reality is that with a bit of innovativeness, you can actually make your fence something that can add a spark of color and personality to your landscape too.

If you’re interested in knowing about some decorative fence ideas that you can try to brighten up your yard, we’ve got five for you below:

Paint your fence. Whether you have a metal or wooden fence, something that you can do to easily change the look of it is to paint it. It can be a conservative neutral tone like white or a shade of brown or a fun bright color like yellow or even pink.

Add some vines and plants. If you happen to like to spend a lot of time in your yard enjoying a glass of iced tea or reading a book, then something else that you can do is add some vines and plants to your fence. The vines, you can easily hang along the pickets of the fence (if it’s wood) or thread through the openings (if it’s metal). Then you can put some potted plants along the base of the fence. It’s a beautiful way to create a calm and serene atmosphere.

Hang some art from it. Is someone in your family a natural artist? If so, why not use your fence as a place where they can hang some of their pieces? That way, it can feel like you have your own art museum in your backyard. If you decide to go with this particular option, just make sure that you put pictures in non-wooden frames. It needs to be frames that can handle inclement weather and will not rot or mildew in humidity. If you would prefer to not use original pieces, remember that there is garden art that you can purchase at a local Pottery Barn or home improvement store as well.

Add some stone columns (and flowers). Say that you were planning to build a fence and went to a place like Ram Fence Company to get some creative ideas. One of the things that they might tell you is that it can make your yard look very royal if you were to connect wrought-iron panels to stone columns. Then, once the fence is done, you can complete the look by putting some of your favorite flowers into some clay pots and placing them on top of each column that you have.

Put a contrasting panel on top of your fence. Something that can add a bit of personality to the wooden fence that’s already up is to place a contrasting panel on top of it. One of our favorite looks is a standard lattice one, or you can design one of your own. For more information on how to design your own fence panels, go to your favorite search engine and put “how to design fence panels” in the search field.
