If you happen to have stone patio furniture, then you already know that it’s a wonderful way to add character to your backyard in a way that is charming, regal and long-lasting . And while it doesn’t tend to require as much consistent upkeep as metal or vinyl patio pieces does, there are still some things that you should do in order to properly maintain it.

If you’d like to know some of the most effective ways to care for your stone patio furniture, we’ve got five tips for you below:

Do some basic cleaning. When it comes to the basic cleaning process of stone furniture, the steps are simple. First what you need to do is use your hose to rinse the pieces off. Then you should apply some natural cleaning detergent to it and along with some scrub brushes, gently scrub the furniture. Do make sure that as you rinse off the furniture that you do it with clean water. Dirty water can actually set back into the stone. Also, in order to preserve the life of your furniture, try and avoid using cleaners that contain bleach, ammonia or vinegar. Ultimately, they tend to discolor your furniture’s surfaces over time.

Treat set-in stains. If you like to spend a lot of time entertaining on your stone patio furniture, then you might have some set-in stains from food or wine. The good news is that you should be able to remove them fairly easily by applying a bit of muriatic acid; however, being that it’s known to bleach just about anything that it touches, be careful to read the directions thoroughly, to put the acid on the stain only and to use rubber gloves during the process.

Get rid of lime and mineral deposits. It’s also not uncommon for there to be mineral deposits that can lead to white spots on your furniture. Our recommendation would be to use an alkaline-based cleaner. That should remove lime, calcium and any other mineral spots that you may see fairly easily.

Seal the surfaces. If you happened to purchase some of your stone furniture at a store like Teton Stone and you asked the customer sales associate for some stone patio maintenance tips, one of the things that we’re pretty sure they would tell you is that it’s absolutely essential that you seal your surfaces. This helps to prevent new stains, plus it can effectively seal the edges of your benches and tabletops too. As far as choosing the best kind of stone sealer for your furniture, our recommendation is to ask the sales associate. They will be able to suggest something based on what they know about the products that they sell.

Do what you can to prevent stains. Speaking of preventing stains, there’s one more preventative tip that we have. Whenever you plan to serve beer or colored beverages, make a point to put some placements on your furniture first. And if you’re planning to host a party, put down some waterproof drop cloths. Simple steps like these can help your stone patio furniture to look beautiful for years to come.
